Any mill is better than no mill. If it's a mini mill or nothing, then the mini mill is worth it imo. You can do pretty much anything with one of these mills as long as you're patient and can get a bit creative. Like, I've machined boatloads of 4140PH on my mini mill and it got the job done. With that being said: try to buy a lightly used machine.

i have 2 taig minimills, one is CNC, the other is manual. both have 60 degree lead screws, and both have backlash problems. the CNC has a mildly adjustable split nut, the manual has a nut that i don't really consider adjustable. i have some serious backlash problems, to the tune of .011 on the y axis of the manual machine, the worst of them. the average is .007, out of the six axes.
