How is taconite made? Taconite pellets are made from taconite ore (cherty or jaspery rock with a high iron content). To make these pellets, the hard taconite ore is blasted and then ground down with water to a fine powder. The fine iron rich particles, mostly of magnetite are extracted from the powder by use of magnetism.
